Since September we have recognized elementary school students for respect, responsibility, citizenship, awareness, trustworthiness, caring, and persistence.

York CSD sent nine Odyssey of the Mind teams to the NYS competition and all performed very well. Here are the results of the State OM tournament.
Division II Classics- 12th Place:

Local business leaders were guest speakers in Mr. Conway's Junior English class.
York Central School alumnus Randy FitzSimmons from Power and Construction Group Inc., Cori Schneider from Milton CAT, and Clair Schroeder from Livingston Associates talked with students about a variety of skills including how participating in school sports and clubs helps develop good work habits.

Solar Eclipse Glasses Collection & Recycle
On behalf of the Environmental Science Club, we are collecting solar eclipse glasses to donate to the Rochester Museum and Science Center for recycling, reusing, and/or renewing.
You can drop off your glasses at York Central School main entrance (Mrs. Dubiel) or send them in with your student.

We are pleased to announce that six York Middle School students' poems are winners in the Genesee Valley Peace Poster contest sponsored by SUNY Geneseo English Department. They are students in Miss Kahnis and Mrs. Dougal's classes.
Congratulations to Brady Conway, Andrew DeRuter, Jaelyn Kane, Dominic Leone, Luke Myers , and Lucy Steffenhagen.
These students and their parents are invited to a reception on Saturday, April 20, at SUNY Geneseo where they will read their poems. Their poems will also be published in a book by the English department at SUNY Geneseo.

Keeping it real with D.A.R.E.! How do you handle stressful situations?
Fifth grade students are about half way through the 10 lesson D.A.R.E. program, taught by School Resource Deputy Kane.
Today, Deputy Kane presented a lesson on the topic of stress. The lesson helped the students examine ways in which their bodies experience stress: Feeling frustrated, perspiring, headache, increased heart rate, fear, etc.
Students engaged in great discussions about their stress experiences such as taking a test, going to a new school, speaking in front of the class, etc. Deputy Kane helped the students identify their stress reactions and then she followed up with an interactive class discussion identifying ways for students to reduce their stress.
For the final activity of the D.A.R.E. lesson the students wrote down the activities that they do enjoy!
From the positive interactions between the students, it is clear that they enjoy their D.A.R.E. lessons!
Deputy Kane has been teaching the D.A.R.E. program to York Elementary students for 12 years.
With the historic Total Solar Eclipse just days away, many teachers used this once-in-a-lifetime event as a learning opportunity for their students.
Mrs. Lippold's fourth grade students made pinhole viewers to learn how light from the sun can enter the pinhole and project onto a paper inside the box where you can see the image of the sun without any damage to your eyes.
SUNY Professor Aaron Steinhauer demonstrated this viewing option while here speaking to students.
Safe viewing glasses were also sent home with all students so they can safely view the total solar eclipse without damage to their eyes.
York Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education!
"This is a wonderful recognition for the York school and the community. We appreciate all of the hard work by our extraordinary music department staff, Mr. Vogel, Miss Aroune, Mrs. Daeffler, and Miss Dessert, and the dedication of our talented students. We are very proud of you all and this accomplishment," said Superintendent of Schools David Furletti.
To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education recognition, York School District provided data about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for the music program and community music-making programs. Our data was verified and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Research into music education shows that educational/cognitive and social skills of children who make music, all benefit from learning an instrument, reading music and singing.

April 4, 2024 is School Librarian Appreciation Day!
Our school librarians Mrs. Feltham and Miss Kolb support our teachers and students by developing materials and activities to support the classroom curriculum. Our librarians are literacy and research specialists in addition to many other hats that they wear, including STEAM instruction.
We take this opportunity to publicly thank you Mrs. Feltham and Miss Kolb for all you do for YCS!
On March 24, 2024, the York All Sports Booster Club organized a fun bowling event at Livingston Lanes for students and staff.
The Second Annual Peter's Wing Day & Basket Raffle was a huge success. Several teams of students and staff had an enjoyable Sunday at Livingston Lanes, eating the best chicken wings around and bowling. Several local businesses and individuals donated gift baskets, which went home with the lucky ticket holders.
Everyone had a great day and the proceeds benefit the York Central School All Sports Booster Club, which in turn supports and celebrates all York athletic teams and the annual All Sports Booster Hall of Fame award.

York CSD paraprofessionals work hard every day to support our teachers and students in the classroom and beyond. Thank you for all you do. YCSD paraprofessionals are appreciated!
For the last day of the week before spring recess, York Elementary School celebrated our favorite storybook characters that we all know and love.
Students and staff were invited to dress up as their favorite storybook character. We had some beloved old favorites and some new characters from our favorite books.
