York Central School is pleased to welcome Middle/High School Principal Mr. Charlie Passarell to the Golden Knights Family.

Mr. Passarell graduated from Avon High School.. He and his family make their home in the Village of Avon.

His educational career began at Geneseo MS/HS. For eight years, he taught high school ELA and coached basketball. He later moved to Greece Arcadia Middle School as an assistant principal and Greece Olympia shortly after as an assistant principal in a 6-12 building.

“I am extremely excited to lead a school community that mirrors the small town, tight-knit community that I affectionately look back upon. One consistent truth that I have learned as an educational leader is that a partnership between families and the school is paramount to the successful movement of the school toward its goals, and ultimately, student success in and beyond high school,” Mr. Passarell commented.

He looks forward to meeting families and plans to host meet-and-greet opportunities this summer.

Please join us in extending a warm Golden Knights welcome to Mr. Passarell.

It's been 10 days since heavy rains caused rapid flash flooding in parts of Livingston County. During the heaviest rainfall on Friday, June 27, just a day after students were finished, several classrooms at York Central School had severe flooding.

We were so fortunate to receive an immediate response by York, Leicester, and Pavilion Departments, Livingston County Emergency Management Services, and countless offers of help from our community.

Thank you all - clean up and restoration of the affected classrooms is underway. We live in a great community!

The head advisory on Tuesday forced us to change our plan for outdoor field days to indoor activities in the air conditioned library, auditorium, and utilizing the indoor pool. The Kona Ice truck was here so we had a sweet snow cone to cool off! Thank you to our Principal Mrs. Kent and all of the teachers for making this a fun day despite the change in activities.

It was a beautiful weather day for them to experience the Maid of the Mist boat ride beneath the falls and for the many other activities they experienced. Check out our Golden Knights, practicing important skills that will directly apply to their lives in and outside of school and college. Called soft skills, they are abilities that focus on how people interact, collaborate, and build relationships. They include skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. To enhance these skills, Mrs. Savage's HS Health class students created informative brochures regarding personal safety. Topics included hiking, ATV, hunting, bicycle, pet, weather, and water safety. They final part of the project was standing in front of the class and presenting their PSA. Another important safety skill to know is CPR. The students learned Compression Only CPR in class. This is an effective skill that utilizes chest compression without rescue breaths which are performed with traditional CPR. Compression only CPR is designed for individuals who are not officially certified or trained in CPR. These students learned proper technique and practiced to the beat of "Staying Alive." The beat of that song is timed with the speed of the chest compressions. These are all important life skills and we are very proud to say our Golden Knights have got them!

Island Vibes at YCS! The YCS auditorium was filled with Caribbean Island vibes from our fifth-grade steelpan drum concert. York Central School AlumnusTed Canning returned to his alma mater to instruct fifth-grade students on the unique sound of the steelpan drum. Mr. Canning worked with the students for just five days, teaching them about the history of drums and how to play the steelpans. Remarkably, the students learned the instrument very well and performed two wonderful concerts - one in the afternoon for the elementary school and one in the evening for their families and the community. This marked the sixteenth year that Mr. Canning has returned to York Elementary School to share his love and knowledge of steelpan drums with our students. We appreciate Mr. Canning’s dedication to YES. Steelpan music originated in Trinidad and Tobago and has spread to other Caribbean countries. The unique sound of the steelpan originates from 55-gallon steel drums.
