Congratulations to these York Golden Knights, selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association's Area All-State Festival. Haley Miller (Clarinet, Symphonic Band); Teagan Minor (Soprano, Mixed Choir); and Sydney Metz (Bass Clarinet, Symphony Orchestra). Lena Balisciano (not pictures) was selected as a Trumpet alternate The festival concert is at Newark High School on Saturday, November 16. Being selected to perform in the Area All-State Festival is one of the highest honors a student-musician can achieve in the state. Only a few schools had students selected from the Genesee Valley School Music Association to perform with the ensembles, made up of the top music students from around Zone 2. Zone 2 is one of the most competitive zones in New York and is comprised of Greater Rochester and the surrounding counties of Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, and Wayne. To be accepted into the group the students successfully auditioned at a Solo Festival in May and their scores secured them a place in the Festivals. To be accepted into Area All-State as a small school is a remarkable achievement that isn’t often done. Congratulations and great job to all.

York Central School hosted community senior citizens for breakfast this morning. High School students served their guests a hot breakfast of eggs, sausage, coffee, juice, and pastries. Mr. Vogel and Sophie Hatfield performed musical pieces. Some students were especially proud to have their grandparents and other family members present. The senior citizens extended their appreciation to Mr. Furletti for having them for breakfast and for everything the school does for seniors in the community. Thanks go to Heidi Newcomb, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, and Laurie Cutcliffe, Food Service Director for their efforts to host the breakfast. The senior citizen breakfast is one of our favorite activities at YCS.

An update from the York Knighty News Desk! Election Day 2024 Coverage! Students in Ms. Moulton's and Mrs. Patanella's classrooms cast their ballots today. It was a highly contested election to decide whether the students wanted to extend recess and increase their homework by the same amount of time, or reduce their recess time, which would increase class time, and in turn, reduce their homework time. Voter turnout was very high and the results were close but by a slim margin, the students voted to increase their recess time, thereby increasing their homework for one day next week. Great job voters! You researched the options and made informed decisions.

Middle School students and staff were out and about in the York community on Monday, raking leaves at the cemetery and other locations. Community service is an important component of learning at YCS. It fosters a sense of civic responsibility and develops important life skills like communication and leadership. Helping others at school and in the community teaches students to build empathy for the world around them. Participating in community service projects lets students see their impact on the world.
