Mrs. Penny Liptak's Accelerated Science students will attest that Science is fun! Students in her class demonstrated their knowledge of cell mitosis in a very creative way. The project included making note cards of facts about cell mitosis. Then, the fun part! Students used playdough to create a model cell. The students added additional pieces of clay to the cell model to demonstrate chromosome changes. Lastly, the cell changes were documented using a stop motion video app. The resulting video produced a great visual for understanding the process of cell mitosis. The students worked in teams to complete the project.

Mrs. Trish Pangrazio's seventh grade science students dissected frogs to gain a better understanding of the anatomy. Students worked in groups with their first step being to expose the cavity of the frog. Using dissection tools and with Mrs. Pangrazio's guidance, the students located and remove the liver, gallbladder, stomach, large and small intestines, heart, lungs, and kidneys. Dissection labs are a way for students to get a thorough understanding of an animal's organs and systems, and how they work.

Mrs. Julie Savage's students were given an assignment to create a game of strategy that can be played by children and their families. The students worked in groups and then demonstrated their game using their classmates as players. They had to write a narrative that included what age groups the game is suitable for, clear directions, and the objective to win the game. Mrs. Savage was impressed with the creativity and variety of the games. Looks like these students will never run out of fun ideas to pass their time!

York High School students traveled to Genesee Community College today to participate in GLOW With Your Hands: Healthcare. Over 600 students from the GLOW region (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties), explored careers and spoke with representatives from hospitals and health systems; professionals in nursing, mental health, social services, and emergency responders. YCS School-to-Work Coordinator Mr. Bill Mackenzie accompanied the students to GCC and said the career fair connected them with a wide-variety of healthcare career representatives who engaged the students in hands-on activities. GLOW With Your Hands is sponsored by area business and education groups.
